Seasonal Tips for Backyard Ponds

From pond opening in the Spring, to pond closing in the Fall, here are a few tips to help you keep you pond in good shape even through the hot dog days of summertime and tips to winterize your pond or water garden.

 

Spring-time Pond Tips

• Check for the Spring Start-up class on the Water Garden class schedule.
• Do a pond cleanout before the season kicks in.
• Use a pondvac to remove sludge from pond bottom and biological filter.
• Continually replenish bacteria to help keep pond clear and in balance.

 

Summer-time Pond Tips

• Attend the water feature builds listed on the Water Garden class schedule.
• Fertilize blooming plants every two weeks to achieve beautiful blooms through the season.
• Keep dead blooms and leaves trimmed from plants.
• Tropical plants and Lotus can be placed in the pond when water temperatures are consistently 70° F.

 

Fall-time Pond Tips

• Check for the Winterizing Your Pond/Water Plants class on the Water Garden class schedule.
• Switch to a cold weather food for fish when water temperatures fall below 70° F.
• Place leaf netting on pond to prevent any debris from accumulating in the pond.

 

Winter-time Pond Tips

• Stop feeding fish when water temperatures are below 50° F.
• Turn pump off if water flow is below 2000 GPH or if residing in zones 6 or lower.
• Place water heater in pond to prevent complete freezing of pond surface.
• Place an air pump in pond to assist in aerating the pond.
